Understand Sleep (HE 20.3502: SL 2) looks at what we know about sleep. It discusses how much we need, what causes us to fall asleep, what will keep us from getting a good night’s sleep and what can happen when you don’t get the rest you need. On the first page, you learn about the cycle of sleep and how much time you spend in each of the five stages. They discuss what happens in each of the five stages of sleep. You will find out what happens if you wake up in each stage of sleep and why sometimes you don’t remember things like a phone call in the middle of the night or your alarm going off in the morning. There is a section telling exactly what the benefits of sleep are and how much we need. Sleep disorders are discussed near the end of the booklet along with tips to getting better sleep. This publication is affiliated with the National Institute of Health and like most items coming from there, has contact information on the back for the NIH Neurological Institute.
This is not a document full of technical jargon. It is easy to read and gives you an overview of everything you might want to know. While you do get some good facts from this document, it does not get in depth in any area. It will help you learn the basics and from there, you can decide what if anything you need to research more. Stop by and take a look. It will not put you to sleep! (Yep, I know. That’s really bad but I couldn’t help it.)
